The Career Pathways

Private companies, grower organisations and state government agencies make large investments in research and development to support the success of Australian horticulture businesses.

Horticulture research and development (R&D) officers help determine, implement, and monitor research and development strategies, policies and plans for the horticulture sector.

Daily tasks involve procuring new investments, writing research proposals, and pitching new concepts to the industry’s strategic advisory panel while working closely with delivery partners, researchers from universities, private, government research organisations.

A horticulture research and development officer initiates research projects to help improve the horticulture sector.

They work closely with stakeholders to understand the challenges and areas that need further investigation. During their research they will create a report which is then shared with stakeholders, beneficiaries, and other researchers to further improve the sector.
